John Mayne Biography

 

John Mayne is an artist and designer who has lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1980.  Originally from New Orleans, he holds a BFA from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, a Masters of Fine Arts degree from Louisiana State University and taught painting, drawing and Art History for many years at Nicholls State University in Thibodeaux, Louisiana.

 

Since moving to the Bay Area, he has worked extensively in theatre and television as a Set Designer and Scenic Artist.  In the theatre he has worked at such venues as Berkeley Rep, The Magic Theatre, Intersection for the Arts, 

A Traveling Jewish Theatre. Southern Repertory in New Orleans, and The Hapgood Theatre at Dartmouth University through Z-space Studio.   He has worked with many outstanding artists and directors including Anne Galjour, Julie Hebert, Gary Leon Hill, John O’Keefe, David Dower, Mary Fourcade, Jane Wenger and others.

 

 In Television, he has designed sets for KTVU, KPIX, KGO, KTSF and Telemundo in the Bay Area.  He has designed the half time sets for 12 Pro-bowls and 12 United Way Thanksgiving Day games for the NFL through the e2k Production group, where he worked with many outstanding pop artists ranging from Don Ho and Mariah Carey to Enrique Eglesias and The Backstreet Boys.   

He has also designed sets in the Republic of Georgia for Rustavi 2-- the first privately owned Television station in the former Soviet Republic.

He has received three International Broadcast Design Awards, 6 regional Emmy Awards and a Telly for his work in TV.  His shop built part of the Earthquake exhibit at The California Academy of Sciences.

 

As an Artist, his sculpture and painting have received numerous awards including a San Francisco Arts Commission Exhibition award and recently in painting and aqua  media at the Marin County Fair.  His work is included in many private and public collections including the New Orleans Museum of Art. He was 

commissioned for a sculpture by the Rex Foundation to commemorate the Anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights.

 

He is married to the Actress/Playwright Anne Galjour.
